My Own Personal Fractal

Our first assignment for Constructing Generative Systems was to make a piece of generative art. Generative art is art that is founded on a set of predetermined rules. The artist creates the work by following these rules; in many ways the piece “makes itself.”

The word “generative” conjured images of fractals in my head, so I decided to make fractals the inspiration for my project. I started with a coil of armature wire, and bent part of it into a cube shape. The first rule for this sculpture was to continue making successive cubes until the shape deformed. After I was finished with that part, I attached tissue paper to the structure so no piece of tissue paper was in the same spatial plane as another.
